American Core Values

American Core Values

“Idealistic people”; word that describes Americans. They establish principles for themselves, they firmly hold them because they believe they are the true, they are important, and desirable. Those ideals sometimes are not respected, however, Americans stick to them as basic beliefs which American Government founded and continues operating nowadays. In this paper, I will talk about some American core values such as: Liberty, Self-Government, Equality, and Individualism. More than studying or understanding the meaning of it, I would like to describe the main concept of the values and show how they are apply in real life scenarios in the American Society.

A journalist reveals corruption in one political party. Important leaders have been robbing money that donors contributed to the party campaign, the leaders used it to purchase things for themselves such as cars and yachts. The journalist publishes an article about the scandal and speaks about it on TV. The leaders lost their jobs and paid huge fines because an investigation was done and it shows that the leaders did exactly what the journalist said. The first core value is Liberty. Liberty is the value that declares that people is free to think, speak, listen, act, reflect, deliberate, declare, etc… The value respects the freedom and rights of others.

The second value is Equality. Equality is one of the most important principles. Equality represents that all people must be treated fairly and with dignity and be able to embrace opportunities for education, economic success, political involvement and have an enjoyable life. An example of Equality in action is: After a fight in the school playground between Asians and White scholars, an independent school limits the time that Asians involved in the fight can spend in the playground during lunch hour but does not impose a similar restriction on the White students. If ethnicity is one of the causes of the disadvantageous treatment of this group of pupils, this is likely to be direct racial discrimination and inequality.

Self-Government is another value. Self-Government is the core value that announces that citizens have an opinion and a right in how their government is working. The population is the primary source of the government’s authority, they have an active participation in political processes. The government exists because it has to promote citizens well-being. A young girl who has just turned 18 was excited to be able to vote on her first time in the upcoming elections. Extremely carefully, she studies the background and positions of each candidate, listens closely to debates, compares ideas, issues and other aspects. Sometime after the elections, she decided to remain informed about the plans of the government, sending them emails to express her opinion, ideas, and comments. This is Self-Government in action.

The next value is Individualism. Faithful to independence, self-sufficiency, private initiative and personal economic growth are some words that describe individualism. This value have to be in control in everyone’s lives and be able to make decision without unnecessary influence from the government or society. In a business that wants to promote individualism, managers allow employees to look after their own work to a high degree. They also give workers freedom to explore new ways of completing basic procedures or projects. Unless a worker presents a threat or otherwise is not performing up to the company's standards, she or he enjoys a high privacy level. Everyone gets a chance to voice individual opinions, and management does not necessarily discourage open debate. This is individualism in action.

The relationship among these values, the rights, principles and responsibilities creates the American Society. All of this create the American life, the belief that if people take responsibility for their lives and work hard, they will have the individual freedom to pursue their personal goals and a good opportunity to compete for success. These values are cultural not moral principles. They are the foundation or Americans democratic live and nation. These cultural values are what distinguish the country from all other. They are what make them “Americans.”

The Changing Face of the American Family

American families have had a massive changed during the past years. Changes in their lifestyle, status behaviors, beliefs, perceptions are some of the changes that American families had. Nowadays, you can find different types of families with other norms, values, ideas, in comparison with the ones from the past. Families are more open-minded and informal than before. The transformation that American families have gone is so huge that someone from the past would be impressed about how everything has changed. The contribution that women have make today and how they have fight for their rights, divorces or not even getting married, in the present time it is not a problem having kids at an early ages, are some of the main variations that the American society have decided to face. Many Americans feel that the change is good, but remember that they are also many “old” people who think that their culture has been ruined.

As it was mentioned before, one of the biggest changes that the American families have had is women´s lifestyle. Working in the house doing house chores and taking care of their families was the only obligation women had around 35 years ago. In the present, you may see that situation in some places, now the majority of the families are otherwise. The American families have adapted to receive incomes from both parts, mom and dad, women contribute equally as men to the house needs.

Another change or aspect that American live now is that couples are not getting married. We all know that marriage is very important for any human being, but nowadays it is not as essential as before. Families now are made of a teenage mom, a young dad (not married) and one or two kids, you can asked them and they will say not to nothing related to marriage. Families do not urge anymore to get married. That’s another of the dramatic modifications that Americans live: Cohabitation. Cohabitation is when two people form a family without getting married, when families are smaller (2 or 3 people) and when they only care about factors such as financial matter or time. On the other hand, divorces are also common in this new lifestyle, the rate of single-parent families has grown.

Accepting, permitting and tolerating homosexual relationships is another of the diverse changes that the American families have established. Lesbian and gay couples are not something ignorable. Accepting homosexuality is not a taboo anymore, a lot a people have the bravery to admit they are homosexual. They are no longer afraid of breaking the traditional expectations or scared of being judged, now they are living their lives freely. There are a large number of homosexual people, and they even have families but they are not evaluated or taken into consideration as if they were families.

Changes among the American families are unusual in the perception that we had about life and the way it should be lived. History shows that the concept of family has changed during the time, it is in constant transformation. Families in modern times, have suffered as no other group of individuals, broad, deep and faster transformations of society and culture will degrade the meaning of everything. A lot of families live in a situation of being faithful to their values, other ones do not know about what it is to have a real, concrete and happy family. In addition, through diverse forms, there is a constant attack to families without realizing the large list of serious effects that they cause in society, in everyday life and the deterioration of the quality of life in general. Remember that this situation comes from a long time ago, when divorce was strongly promoted and subsequently the wave of feminists, making even more hard familiar life. Family, considered as the basic unit of society, nowadays under a sequence of constant changes, changes that have always existed, but now they are presented in a faster and more practical way.

Cultural Learning Outcomes

Third Culture Kids

While I was doing a research for one of the courses that I’m taking I got with this Word or phrase: “Third Culture Kids”. Every day we learn something new so I want you to know what it is all about.

What are Third Culture Kids? What does Third Culture Kids mean?

Formally defined, TCKs are people who have spent a portion of their formative childhood years (0-18) in a culture different than their parents’. Most TCKs will return to their parents’ home country at some point in their lives, undergoing repatriation. TCKs tend to develop their identities while living abroad, thus blending their “home” culture with the culture of the world around them. People who have attended international schools, who are children of diplomats, “military brats,” or children of missionaries are just a few examples of TCKs.
In their ground breaking book, Third Culture Kids: The Experience of Growing up Among Worlds authors David C. Pollock and Ruth E. Van Reken write that a “TCK builds relationships to all of the cultures, while not having full ownership in any. Although elements from each culture are assimilated into the TCK’s life experience, the sense of belonging is in relationship to others of similar background.”
TCKs are, quite literally, citizens of the world. They are hard to define and are made of an infinite amount of experiences. The bottom line is, whether or not you fit into the formal definition of a Third Culture Kid, if you think you’re a TCK, then this community will welcome you with open arms.

I found this video from Adult Third Culture Kids, they share some of their experiences and perspectives. Hope you enjoy it.

Cultural Perspectives

Cultural perspective refers to the way that individuals are formed by their environments as well as social and cultural factors. Such factors include a person's nationality, race and gender. Cultural perspective pervades every aspect of human life, from the ordinary to the exotic or foreign. It affects how people relate to one another and their ability to communicate. Individuals with dramatically different cultural perspectives may find that they have an especially hard time understanding why the other behaves a certain way. To a certain extent, cultural perspective influences the relationships that people have with themselves as well, such as spiritual, mental and emotional well-being or lack thereof.

While I was searching for more information I got with this article that talks about Croos-Cultural Perspective Taking written by a Dr. Louise Rasmussen, Cognitive Psychologist; I really liked it so I wanted to share it with you.
